Paro

Paro is Bhutan's most visited valley and home to the country's only international airport. The legendary Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) monastery clings to a cliffside at 3,120 m — a 2-hour hike that every visitor remembers forever. The Paro Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang temple, and the National Museum add layers of history and culture. Paro Tsechu festival in spring draws thousands of visitors with its sacred mask dances.

Thimphu is the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights — police officers direct traffic by hand at the main junction. Punakha

Punakha was Bhutan's capital until 1955 and remains one of the most beautiful places in the kingdom. The magnificent Punakha Dzong sits at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu (Father River) and Mo Chhu (Mother River). In spring, the dzong is surrounded by blooming jacaranda trees — a scene that feels almost unreal. The suspension bridge, Chimi Lhakhang fertility temple, and rice terraces make Punakha a complete destination.

Bumthang

Bumthang is Bhutan's spiritual heartland — a high-altitude valley at 2,800 m filled with ancient temples, apple orchards, and pine forests. Jambay Lhakhang is one of the 108 temples built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. Kurje Lhakhang holds the body print of Guru Rinpoche himself. The valley also produces Bhutan's famous Red Panda beer and organic buckwheat. Bumthang feels timeless, quiet, and deeply sacred.

Do Indians need a visa for Bhutan?

Indians do not need a visa. They need an Entry Permit at Paro Airport or at the Phuentsholing/Jaigaon border. A valid passport or voter ID is sufficient. The permit first covers Thimphu & Paro; for other areas a route permit is required.

What is the SDF fee in Bhutan?

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a per-person per-night charge. Indian citizens pay INR 1,200 per night. Children under 5 are free; ages 6–11 get 50% off. Our team handles all SDF payment arrangements.

What documents should Indians carry?

Passport with 6 months' validity or voter ID. For minors: birth certificate and parent consent letter. Carry INR in notes of ₹500 or less (up to ₹25,000). Travel insurance is strongly advised.

Can I travel beyond Thimphu & Paro?

Yes — but a Route Permit or Special Area Permit is required. Trekking routes need extra permits. Our Bhutan team arranges all required permits as part of your package, quickly and hassle-free.

What is covered under the SDF?

The SDF funds Bhutan's healthcare, education, culture and environmental conservation. It is separate from your tour cost — hotels, meals, transport and guides are not included in SDF.

Is cash the only option in Bhutan?

ATMs are available in Thimphu and Paro. In smaller towns and villages, cash is essential. Carry sufficient Ngultrum (BTN ≈ INR 1:1) or Indian Rupees. Our team will advise on cash requirements for your specific itinerary.
